Introduction
Sichuan University is located in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province in Western China, one of the most populous provinces. The city has a long history and was the capital of an ancient kingdom known as the “City of Silk” after its most famous product. Chengdu was founded in the Fifth Century BC and was visited by Marco Polo in the 13th Century. It was prosperous and was laid out on the same plan as Peking with ancient palaces and major gates on a north-south axis, dividing the city into two parts, western and eastern. By the mid 1950’s, however, it had outgrown its neat plan.
Sichuan University is a key comprehensive university directly under the State Ministry of Education. It incorporated three key universities, namely, the former Sichuan University, Chengdu University of Science & Technology (CUST) and West China University of Medical Sciences (WCUMS).
Now known as the West China Center of Medical Sciences (WCCMS) of Sichuan University, the West China Union University (WCUU) was founded in 1910. The University commemorated its 90th anniversary on October 6th, 2000, at which time the University’s history was celebrated, its past was honored and an even brighter future anticipated at the dawn of the new millennium. In 2007, there are about 400 foreign students studying in West China Center of Medical Sciences (WCCMS) of Sichuan University.
