Introduction

Towering trees have their roots and the rivers flowing around the mountains have their sources. The predecessor of Xian Jiao Tong University is Nanyang Public University that was founded in Shanghai in 1896; in 1905, it was transferred to the commercial department and was renamed High Industrial School; in 1906, it was under the command of postal transmission department. It was renamed Shanghai High Industrial School of Postal Transmission Department.

In 1955, the State Council decided to move Jiao Tong University to Xian. In May of 1956, it began to move. In September of 1957, Jiao Tong University has two parts, one was in Xian. The other was in Shanghai. Later, most departments, specialties, books, equipment and instruments and teachers, students and staffs moved to Xian; on July 31, 1959, No, 212 Guoerluzi document of State Council approved and agreed education department's decision that the Xian part and Shanghai part of Jiao Tong university become independent and set up two universities, Xian Jiao Tong University and Shanghai University.

The president of former Jiao Tong University acted as the president of Xian Jiao Tong University. In the same year, Xian Jiao Tong University was listed as the key university in China. Later, it became one of a few universities built according to the "Seventh Five- Year Plan" and "Eighth Five- Year Plan" of China. It was also one of the universities that entered the construction of "211 project" of China. In September, it was determined to be one of a few universities that had the target to build world famous high level University. In April of 2000, approved by the State Council, Xian Medical University, Shannxi Institute of Finance and Economics and Xian Jiao Tong University were merged and formed the new Xian Jiao Tong University.

Today, Xian Jiao Tong University passed the key construction of national "Seventh Five-Year Plan" "Eighth Five-Year Plan","211 Project" and "985 Project". It has developed into a university that has the feature of science and Engineering and covers 9 subjects such as science, engineering medicine, economics, management, art and law. It has become an important base that is the integration of talents training, scientific research and social services and propels the social development.
Looking forward to the future, the west region development provides historic opportunity for the great development of Xian Jiao Tong University. Xian Jiao Tong University will keep on the school-running tradition and school-running feature of high starting point, thick foundation, strict requirement and stressing practice, carry forward the school style of loving China and our university, pursuing truths, being diligent and steady and hard work and plain living, choose the training students as the center, teachers as the subject, administer by law, standardize management and build itself into world famous and high level university.
