City Guide - Jinan
Jinan is the capital city of Shandong Province. Jinan is an essential birthplace of the civilization in China. Shun, a chieftain of the pristine tribe was born and lived around Jinan. Chengzi Cliff in eastern Jinan is the place where Longshan Civilization (4728 - 4000 years ago) of the late Neolithic Age was found with the basalt as its symbol. At this site, about 200,000 square meters of China’s oldest city relics was discovered. Jinan has a history of more than 2728 years. When the Shire and County System was established by the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty, Jinan belonged to Jibei Shire. At the beginning of the Han Dynasty, Jinan Shire was founded. Consequently, Jinan got its name. Since the Ming and the Qing dynasties, Jinan has been the capital of Shandong Province. The city of Jinan was set up in July, 1929.
There are many historic sites in Jinan such as Shungeng Mountain which is the ruin of the Shun Civilization (22nd century B.C.); the Qi Great Wall (built in the 3rd century B.C) which is even older than the Qin Great Wall; China’s oldest ground structure - the stone ancestral temple of Xiaotangshan Guoshi of the Han Dynasty (built in the 1st century B.C); China’s oldest stone pagoda - Liubu Four-Door Pagoda of the Sui Dynasty (built in the 7th century); the colorful sculptures at Lingyan Temple of the Song Dynasty ( built in the 11th century) which are praised as the “Best Sculptures in China”.
Jinan is also the home to many celebrities such as Bianque, founder of the Chinese traditional medicine science; Fang Xuanling and Qin Qiong, men of great merit in founding the Tang Dynasty (618-907); wellknown litterateurs such as Li Qingzhao and Xin Qiji. In addition, outstanding scholars such as Li Bai, Du Fu, Su Shi, Zeng Gong also lived in or visited Jinan in the past. As a result, it comes to an agreement that “there are many celebrities in Jinan”.
Amongst its major industries, there are machinary, metallurgy, petroleum processing, electric power, textile, chemical, electrical, food and light industry. Especially, the product of the meticulous chemical industry, the transportation equipment, fluorite and cigarette is in the important in China. In agriculture, there is wheat, corn, peanut, bast-fiber plants and tobacco. Jinan is the national base of commodity grain. The roses and e jiao in Ping Yin are very famous.

Climate: Jinan is in the transition belt of the southern part of Taiyi hilly land and the northern part of Huabei Plain. The plain and the water area can occupy 43 percent. The Yellow River flows from the Northwest to the Southeast. It is the semi-humid climate in warm temperate zone. The average annual temperature is 14 degrees Celsius, and the average annual precipitation is 685mm. The black frost period can last 216 days.
Something About Jinan: The Thousand-Buddha Mountain
The Thousand-Buddha Mountain (Qianfo Shan) is one of the key points of interest in the city of Jinan. It is about 258 meters high (846 feet) ranging from east to west. It has been constructed into a park in1959 which occupies an area of about 166 hectare (140 acres).The mountain was called Mt. Li in ancient times. However, in the early days of Sui Dynasty (581-618) a great many statues of Buddha were chiseled on the rocks of the mountain and the Thousand-Buddha Temple was built and soon became famous, so the name of the temple was to become that of the mountain. There are many scenic spots and historical relics distributed in the mountain.
