Standards
Test takers have beginner level listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Be able to have simple communication on familiar topics and have basic knowledge of Chinese culture.
Be able to handle simple conversation such as personal information, routine matters, food, transportation and hobbies. Know how to use polite words and phrases in different situations. Get information needed in public places.

1. Listening
Test takers can understand all the required topics and tasks from band 1, including simple dialogues (within 80 characters) with basic words or simple sentences. The materials are spoken in a proper and clear pronunciation slowly (no less than 100 characters per minute). Be able to understand basic information with the help of pictures or real objects.
2. Speaking
Test takers can handle all required syllables for band 1 and pronounce these syllables properly. Be able to use the vocabulary and grammar from band 1 to hold interactions and speak about various topics. Be able to have simple dialogues with commonly used words and sentences.

3. Reading
Test takers can read the required syllables, characters and vocabulary for band 1. Be able to use pictures and pinyin to understand the materials (within 100 characters). Reading speed should be no less than 80 characters per minute. Be able to recognize daily signs and get basic information from simple notes, files and maps.
4. Writing
Test takers can handwrite the 100 Chinese characters from the required handwriting list. Be able to have basic comprehension of the strokes, writing orders of Chinese characters and common punctuations. Writing speed should be no less than 10 characters per minute. Be able to fill out basic personal information and write notes with simple words and sentences.
Test Content
HSK (Level 1) exam is designed for individuals who are beginners in Chinese, having acquired fundamental listening and reading skills.
HSK (Level 1) has a total of 40 questions, divided into listening and reading sections. The entire exam takes about 40 minutes (including 5 minutes for candidates to fill in personal information).

The HSK (Level 1) score report provides three scores: listening, reading, and total score. Achieving a full score entails earning 200 points, while a cumulative score of 120 or above qualifies as a passing mark. HSK scores are valid for two years (starting from the exam date).
