New HSK Test 3.0
In March 2021, the Ministry of Education released the new Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education. The new standards were officially implemented on July 1, 2021. Under these standards, the new HSK test 3.0 is divided into three levels and nine bands.
Elementary: Band 1 to 3
Intermediate: Band 4 to 6
Advanced: Band 7 to 9
2026 Update for the New HSK Test 3.0
In 2026, the new HSK test 3.0 received another update. This latest update primarily focuses on adjusting the vocabulary requirements for each level, especially for beginner and intermediate learners. Here is what changed and why it matters.
A total of 5207 words changed levels. No vocabulary was removed, meaning the total word count remains roughly the same. The updates follow two clear patterns.
Downward shift: Common, concrete, and modern daily-use words moved to lower levels.
Upward shift: Abstract words moved to higher levels, reflecting the deeper understanding required to use them correctly.
The core vocabulary remains unchanged. The 9-level structure and the test format are exactly the same. If you studied the HSK 3.0 materials published before the 2026 update, the vast majority of what you learned still applies. Words did not disappear; they just shifted levels.
Grammar expectations at each level also remain the same. HSK has always tested vocabulary far more than grammar, and the 2026 update doesn’t change that.
If you are just starting to prepare for the HSK test, you should use the updated 2026 HSK 3.0 materials where available.
