Standards
Test takers have average listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Be able to communicate and complete daily social interactions on basic topics such as daily life, study and work.
Be able to handle basic conversation such as travel experience, course schedule, cultural and sports events, festivals and customs, education and occupation, etc. Be able to give relatively formal invitations by both spoken language and writing letters. Be able to reply to other people invitation.

1. Listening
Test takers can understand all the required topics and tasks from band 3, including daily speech or dialogues (within 300 characters) with long simple sentences and simple compound sentences. The materials are spoken in a standard and clear pronunciation at a slow pace (no less than 180 characters per minute). Be able to understand key information with the help of speaking voice, tone and speed.
2. Speaking
Test takers can handle all required syllables for band 3 and pronounce these syllables properly. Be able to use the vocabulary and grammar from band 3 to hold interactions and speak about various topics. Be able to communicate or discuss with comparatively complex sentences.

3. Reading
Test takers can read the required syllables, characters and vocabulary for band 3. Be able to understand the materials (within 300 characters). Reading speed should be no less than 120 characters per minute. Be able to understand the basic complex sentences and comprehend declarative and descriptive materials to have a general impression of the materials and the details. Be able to use dictionaries to learn and understand new words and characters. Be able to initially handle the skill of fast reading and extensive reading.
4. Writing
Test takers can handwrite the 300 Chinese characters from the required handwriting list. Be able to better handle strokes, writing orders of Chinese characters and basic punctuations. Writing speed should be no less than 20 characters per minute. Be able to write emails, notice and a short descriptive paragraph within the given duration, with no less than 200 Chinese characters. The writing is supposed to be basically smooth and fluent with clear expressions.
Test Content
HSK (Level 3) is tailored for beginners who have acquired a broader proficiency in Chinese, encompassing skills in listening, reading, and basic writing.
HSK (Level 3) has a total of 80 questions, divided into listening, reading, and writing sections. The entire exam takes about 90 minutes (including 5 minutes for candidates to fill in personal information).

The HSK (Level 3) score report provides four scores: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Total. Achieving a full score entails earning 300 points, while a cumulative score of 180 or above qualifies as a passing mark. The HSK scores are valid for two years, starting from the day of the exam.
